Ohio Child Drownings Up in Autumn

New data available from the USA Swimming Foundation shows that Ohio experienced two fatal child drownings during the month of September. So far in 2016, there have been 11 child drownings in Ohio, which is almost double their year-over-year total. Sadly, Ohio also ranks among the top 10 states for child drownings in 2016 and is the highest ranking northern state.

All of Ohio’s fatal child drownings this year have involved children ages six and under, with 90 percent of the incidents involving children younger than four years old.

This is a stark reminder that even though summer has ended and autumn is upon us, many families are still swimming in indoor pools and waterparks, taking swimming lessons, and enjoying time around the water while on vacation. It’s important for parents to remember that water safety is not just a summertime issue, but something that needs to happen year round. Pool Safely reminds parents that simple safety steps save lives. To learn more, visit the parents section on our website.
